hip + knee
Bursitis
- Inflammation or swelling in a Bursa (fluid-filled sac in body that helps reduce friction between a bone and a tendon) – the Shoulder Bursa is called the Subacromial Bursa ,the Hip Bursa is called Trochanteric Bursa and the Knee Bursa is called the Prepetellar Bursa.
-
Can be experienced in the shoulder as: shoulder or upper arm pain that limits reaching, or lying on shoulder and athletic activity -
Can be caused by several issues including: muscle imbalance, bone spurs, poor posture, poor ergonomics and/or shoulder blade weakness
-
Can be experienced in the hip as: hip, groin or buttock ache or pain that limits lying or sleeping on that side, stair use, walking or running -
Can be caused by several issues including: muscle imbalance, SI Joint Dysfunction, chronic low back pain, flat feet or excessive pronation, and/or knee or hip weakness
-
Can be experienced in the knee as: pain or swelling below the knee cap that limits walking, stair use, kneeling, sitting and athletic activity -
Can be caused by several issues including: muscle imbalance, flat feet or excessive pronation, hip or knee weakness, and/or kneeling excessively

Hip Arthritis
- Hip Arthritis is inflammation in the hip area due to wearing out of the surface cartilage in the hip joint creating bone on bone friction
-
Arthritic hip pain can be experienced as pain or stiffness in the hip, groin, thigh, or knee pain – limiting walking endurance, ease with stairs, sit-to-stand function or athletic activity -
Pain is worse in the morning, better with initial activity, and worsens again at the end of the day in later stages -
Hip pain and arthritis can be caused by several issues including: natural progression of aging (with modern medicine, we tend to outlive our joints!), past acute injury, chronic muscle imbalance, low back pain or SI Joint Dysfunction
-

Anti-Inflammatory Modalities: iontophoresis, ultrasound, electrical stimulation -
Individualized Therapeutic Exercise to improve strength, stability, and flexibility in order to restore healthy movement patterns -
Can include desensitization of the central nervous system (Associative Awareness Technique (AAT)), Trigger Point Dry Needling, or Therapeutic Taping
Hip Pain
- Pain in the front, side, back of the hip or buttocks
-
Can be experienced as dull ache, sharp shooting pain, burning sensations, or intense pain that limits motion -
Can be caused by several issues: inflammation of the tendons, muscles, bursa, or hip joint, arthritis, muscle imbalance, poor sitting or sleeping habits and/or low back problems

IT Band Syndrome
-
liotibial Band Syndrome or ITBS, is one of the most common running injuries. -
IT Band Syndrome is a common injury among runners. It can result in painful inflammation and tightness, but is treatable with physical therapy -
IT Band Syndrome is pain, inflammation or tightness in the tendon of Tensor Fascia Latae muscle (TFL) which connects from pelvis to the knee -
It can be experienced as knee/hip/thigh pain or tightness – it usually limits walking, running, and stair use. -
Several issues can lead to IT Band Syndrome including: SI Joint Dysfunction, muscle imbalance, flat feet or excessive pronation, weakness in knee/hip and/or excessive athletic activity

Knee Arthritis
- Knee inflammation due to wearing out of the surface cartilage in the knee joint creating bone on bone friction
-
Knee arthritis can be experienced as pain or stiffness in the knee, groin, or thigh– limiting walking endurance, ease with stairs, sit-to-stand function or athletic activity -
Pain is worse in the morning, better with initial activity, and worsens again at the end of the day in later stages -

Knee Pain
- Knee Pain is pain in the front, side or back of the knee
-
It can be experienced as pain, tightness or weakness or swelling -
It can be caused by several issues: muscle imbalance, ligament sprain, cartilage damage, arthritis, or joint inflammation
-

Knee Tendonitis
- Pain and inflammation in the tendons (where the muscle attaches to the bone) in the Patellar Tendon, Quadriceps Tendon, or the IT Band
-
Can be experienced as a dull, constant ache at rest or immediate, shooting pain with movement in the outside, inside or back of the knee -
Can be caused by several issues: sudden change in running or walking activities, poor shoe choice, faulty foot mechanics, and/or muscle imbalance in the hip and leg

Numbness + Tingling
- The feeling of numbness or tingling, or pain that you can’t put your finger on, is a sign that a nerve in your body is irritated. Read below for specific areas of the body to help you understand your specific condition. Please note, the symptoms of nerve irritation can show up as pain, numbness and tingling together, or just one or the other.
-
Do you wake up with your hands “asleep” and have to shake them out in order to feel normal? -
Do your arms or hands tingle when your ride or bike or use your computer? -
Have you ever felt a pain, numbness or tingling in your arms or hands for no apparent reason and can’t seem to make it go away?
-
Nerve irritation due to inflammation or pinching of the nerve in your neck, chest (Thoracic Outlet), elbow (Cubital/Radial Tunnel) or wrist (Carpal Tunnel) -
Nerve irritation can be caused by joint restriction, inflammation or muscle tightness in these areas
Do your legs or feet tingle when you stand or walk?
Have you ever felt pain, numbness or tingling in your lower back, legs or feet for no apparent reason and can’t seem to make it go away?
You may be experiencing:
-
Sciatica - which is nerve irritation due to inflammation or pinching of the nerve in your lower back, gluteal muscles (Piriformis Syndrome), or ankle (Tarsal Tunnel) -
nerve irritation can be caused by joint restriction, inflammation or muscle tightness in these areas -
Numbness and tingling can be the result of a pinched nerve
Numbess and Tingling Treatment Includes:
-
Joint Mobilization -
Joint Manipulation -
Therapeutic Massage -
Can include Trigger Point Dry Needling or desensitizing the central nervous system (Associative Awareness Technique)
